Gregory D.V. Holmes
In 1980, Gregory D.V. Holmes was the first African American to earn a Bachelor of Music in Theory and Composition from the University of Miami. Immediately upon graduating, Mr. Holmes found full-time employment as an on-staff composer and engineer for the Maryland Public Television where he wrote the opening theme for the Peabody Award-Winning television series: “Terra: Our World.” In 2025, his orchestral piece, “A Mountain Day,” was awarded a bronze medal at the Global Music Awards in the category of original Score.
At night, Holmes attended law school and briefly diverted into being a New York City trial lawyer for 27 years before retiring and returning to composing. In between trials, he ran a very prosperous photography business which specialized in capturing musical theatre and was the official photographer for the New Jersey All-State, Southern and Central regions choral and instrumental groups.
Holmes is an informal student of his friend and music composition mentor Dr. Quincy C. Hilliard. He is very proud of his adult children Jaycee and Ernest, and most thankful and eternally blessed for his loving and supportive wife, Flor.
