“Joyance” is an engaging and dynamic composition for full orchestra, distinguished by its lyrical slow section in 3/4 time, an intricate trumpet fugato for four players, and a powerful, exhilarating conclusion. Notably, it is one of the few orchestral works by Smith to incorporate the marimba, adding a unique timbral element to the orchestration. With its vivid contrasts and compelling structure, “Joyance” serves as an ideal and memorable concert finale.
