Rondo for Trumpet
The second solo work with band accompaniment was written for “Doc” Severinsen.. A rousing tarantella-type ostinato in 6/8 with plenty of Latin percussion opens the piece, which then gives way to a beautiful Adagio showing the lyricism of the soloist. A Da Capo brings us to the beginning, and then Smith challenges the soloist with a very difficult cadenza. The band accompaniment is straightforward, however the solo part is very advanced.
