Guy Earl Holmes was born in Baraboo, Wisc. on February 14, 1873. A prolific composer and performer, Holmes toured with the bands of several traveling circuses. Around 1914 Holmes and Clay Smith formed the Apollo Concert Company, a musical ensemble which toured extensively on the Chautauqua and Lyceum circuits. Of note was the Apollo Saxophone Quartet, in which Holmes performed. This ensemble gained great popularity as it rendered many classical selections in arrangements for saxophone ensemble and was known for its virtuosity.

Holmes published nearly 200 band works over a period of more than 40 years. His works include marches, overtures, waltzes, and music in other styles.

Following the premature passing of Clay Smith, Holmes settled with his wife Lotus on the north side of Chicago. He was a longtime instructor at the Vandercook College of Music. G. E. Holmes died in Chicago on February 10, 1945, and is buried in his hometown of Baraboo.
